The Yeaton Family included a relative, Hopley Yeaton who was the first man to be given command of a Coast Guard vessel, being commissioned by George Washington. As an interesting note: Doug Sawyer, our current neighbor, Assistant Fire Chief, rescue squad leader, and the Inn Electrician (this is one man who does all these things), is the 23 year-old great-great-grandson of the Inn's original builder pictured to your left. It is fortunate that the Yeaton Family lived in their historic homestead from 1826 until 1985. The quality workmanship and carvings as originally created, remain intact. At the age of 23, Paul Yeaton built this dignified home using oxen and handtools. Miles of stonewalls run across the property, much of which is now beautiful hardwood forest. Paul and Lydia Ann Romance: They met when he was 27 years old and she was but 10 years old. Paul's older brother was already married to Lydia's older sister. Paul and Lydia married when he was 40. Together, they formed a powerful team raising their illustrious son, Edwin, establishing the then-rustic community, and creating the legacy which we so enjoy today. Surely, Lydia and Paul would be amazed to know that with today's technologies, we are able to sharpen their image from a faded sepia-toned print. We can look into their eyes, digitally on the world wide web, during the 21st century. |
