When one drives rapidly toward the Inn over the "hiccups" in the West Road (sections which are flat and then rapidly slope downhill), it is possible that these were created by young Paul Yeaton about 180 years ago.

As springs of fresh water lined the West Road, and as this steep section of hills is enroute to historic Hallowell Village, we now imagine that the sharp inclines leading away from the Inn, followed by short flat expanses, allowed the men to water the oxen and horses pulling heavy loads, as they made their way to market.
